Banks in Chitungwiza

Recent budget consultations have revealed residents in Chitungwiza are appreciative of the improvement in solid waste management through the weekly door to door collections which they hailed as “quite a relief.”

Heaps of garbage had become an eyesore and a time bomb for the outbreak of diseases like cholera and typhoid in the city’s residential suburbs and to avert this, council recently purchased a compacter truck and a front end loader.

Plans are also on the cards to acquire two more compacter trucks before the end of the year to replace the old fleet, according to the Health Services Acting Director Herbert Chirowodza.

“Ideally, we should have two collections weekly, but with the limited resources, we have managed to ensure that every premises gets at least one collection a month.

“But let me hasten to say that enough awareness needs to be created in the community with regards to waste management. The burden on council would be alleviated to a great extend if bio-degradable material is handled at household level such as by creating fertility trenches to reduce trucking.

“Illegal settlements are a big challenge for us but all the same, we have to provide a service to them too because failure to do so will result in them dumping waste in the open spaces resultantly posing disease outbreaks,” he said.

The difficulty council encountered in serving these areas is that some of them do not have access roads.

Meanwhile, council has been assisted by JICA in identifying a land fill site which will soon be registered with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) after an Environmental Assessment Impact has been carried out.
