Banks in Chitungwiza

Students and senior residents pursuing professional careers have called on authorities to consider introducing internet services in the three libraries run by Chitungwiza Municipality. The libraries are situated in Seke Unit F, Zengeza 2 Shopping Centre and at St Mary’s Hall.

Users who spoke to The Chi-towner said there was need to embrace technology through e-study and e-learning and considering that facilities were there (buildings), all council needed to do was engage service providers for the installation of the much needed fixed or wi fi connection.

“With the ever changing syllabi, the textbook can no longer sustain our academic demands as it is overtaken by time and the only solution is to access the net which, just at the punch of a key, everything is at your disposal instantly.

“On the other hand, it will be a revenue-generation vehicle for municipality as users are prepared to pay as much as $30 per month as opposed to the current $1 user fee paid to access the library now,” argued Tinotenda Govere from Zengeza 2 who is a second year long distance law student with the University of South Africa.

A librarian at Zengeza, Remigius Chamunorwa, who confirmed the call for an internet service had been forwarded to them said the current capacity of their library was 60, but they sometimes served as many as 120 students per day. He said the demand for library service is overwhelming especially during the holidays and when students are reading for impending public examinations.

“The number continues to grow with the influx of private colleges and the expansion of the city and I guess there will be need for a satellite library soon for students living in the new Manyame settlement,” he said.

At Zengeza 2 Shopping Centre, for instance, there is just one privately-owned internet café which accommodates eight people at a time, thereby compelling information seekers to commute to Makoni or Harare in search of information.

A NUST final year Accounting student who has opted to have a fixed internet service installed at his home said he was collecting an average of $300 per week from friends who asked to use his computer.
